Once a student who studied in the Teaching and Learning Center, Brigitte Green-Churchwell is now the Director who oversees the operations of the TLC. A four-time graduate of Bowling Green State University, Green-Churchwell is no stranger to education. She received her Associate of Arts, B.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Education, M.Ed. emphasis Curriculum and Instruction, M.Ed. emphasis Special Education: Gifted and Talented/Twice Exceptional. Brigitte is a current Doctoral student in BGSU’s Organization Development and Change in the Schmidthorst College of Business. Accolades to Brigitte’s service to the TLC, on the fine job she has done — and continues to do — leading this unit with professionalism, efficiency, and always in the best interest of our students as well as how she goes above and beyond her duties and in an innovative manner, and with a humanistic approach have been conveyed by her superiors.

In addition to managing the administrative side of the TLC, Brigitte is an academic and success coach for the college. She tutors in education, Microsoft Office 365, reading and writing. She has been known to successfully support students in courses that are not in her repertoire in her Academic Enhancement role. “I was ready to quit and I literally turned to walk out the door when Ms. Brigitte walked in. Jackie is often students' first contact at the TLC. She matches students with tutors and other resources.  She has many years experience at BGSU Firelands and can answer just about any question that starts with "Who do I need to talk to for..." or "Where can I go to find ....". 

If you are interested in student employment, consider tutoring. Contact Jackie if you have an A or high B in the course you seek to tutor and receive the approval of your instructor.

Brent Fox has been tutoring math in the Teaching and Learning Center for over a decade. Students who tutor with him for math, chemistry, history, political science, and some biology rave about the academic support he provides in asynchronous and synchronous tutoring sessions.

Trigonometry student, James M. shared this about his recent asynchronous tutoring experience with Mr. Fox, “After studying the presentations you sent and doing some practice problems, I'm glad to say that I scored an 84% on my latest exam! (i.e. Chapters 6-8). The 84% definitely helped my overall grade and I'm very optimistic that I will be able to pass Plane Trigonometry! With this continued momentum, I'll be able to enroll in MATH 1310 next semester!”

The Teaching and Learning Center may not have Tutors for each of the courses taught at BGSU Firelands, but Computer Science is not one of them.

Elaine Tomczyk has tutored students in all CS courses offered at the college in addition to entry level math courses and study skills.

Elaine’s tutoring approach is hands on and she has made a significant difference in the success students have gained in these courses.

Ginger Packert

Ginger Packert taught history in high school and college, so who would not want her as a history tutor. Over forty years of teaching experience Ginger understands how to support students with where they are and provides structure to learning and retaining the information. Matthew L. said it best, “She [Ginger] really knows history.” He conveyed her tutoring assistance was essential in helping him pass his Early American History course with Dr. Michael Kimaid.

That is not where Ginger’s tutoring story ends. She is qualified to support other social science and humanities courses, such as Sociology, Geriatrics, English, Communications, and more.

Writing is required for many final exams. It is too late to get help in the middle of the exam unless it is from the professor. To be sure you get your writing right schedule an appointment with Miriam Wheeler the Writing Lab’s professional tutor.

Educated abroad in a Teacher’s College, Miriam’s writing foundations were established by high standards that often exceed those found in western culture. A graduate of the Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University, Miriam has tutored secondary education students as well as post-secondary and graduate students.

Brandon H. says, “I could never have earned a ‘B’ in my college writing class without Ms. Miriam. She definitely knows how to get me to understand what the instructions are asking me to do and how to make my work make sense.”

Dr. Michelle Tomczyk, also one of our newest TLC team members, from Pittsburgh. She earned her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh completing a postdoc at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Tomczyk’s research studies quantum transport in nanoelectronic devices, focusing on superconductivity in complex oxides.

During Dr. Tomczyk’s postdoc, she enjoined an outreach opportunity with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to explore a career in informal education. Unfortunately, this experience was interrupted by the pandemic; however, Dr. Tomczyk learned a great deal from the experience that can be applied in academic support services.

Dr. Tomczyk tutors a myriad of courses that include: PHYS 1010 Basic Physics, MATH 1150 Intro To Statistics I, MATH 1190 Real World Math Skills, MATH 1220 College Algebra, MATH 1310 Calculus-Analytic Geometry I, MATH 2130 Math for Early Child Teachers, with strong interest in working with faculty members to tutor ACCT 2210 Acct & Bus Concepts I, ACCT 2220 Acct & Bus Concepts II, ECON 2000 Intro To Economics, ECON 2020 Principle of Microeconomics, and ECON 2030 Principle of Macroeconomics.

Dr. Emily Carroll, one of the Teaching and Learning Center’s newest Professional Tutors, earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Southern Illinois University and holds an MSHS in Public Health, a MA in Political Science, and a BA in Women’s Studies from Bowling Green State University. Post graduate work included think tanks devoted to advancing women’s and children’s policy issues and she consulted for several progressive policy organizations. Her background also includes project management including research design, data collection, and analysis.

Dr. Carroll tutors: Introduction to Public Speaking, Introduction to Women's Studies, American Government, Introduction to Public Administration, and Social Policy with Comparative Government as a strong possibility.

Professional Tutor Helen Smith has taught secondary and post-secondary biology courses and other subjects. Students with an interest in nursing should keep Helen’s contact information close as she tutors most of the health science courses including medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.

In the short time she has been with us, Helen has tutored dozens of students who are thankful to have her help. “I was sure I was going to fail Dr. G’s BIOL 2050. Then I started tutoring with the TLC and now I am going to pass the course.” – Alexis B.
