BGSU Firelands Recognizes Scholarship Recipients, Donors
Huron, Ohio – On Friday morning, Bowling Green State University Firelands College honored some of their best and brightest during the 15th Annual Scholarship Breakfast.
Held in the Cedar Point Center on the Firelands campus, the event brings together the recipients of scholarships offered through the College and the donor organization and individuals who support those scholarships.
“It’s really a special event,” said BGSU Firelands Director of Enrollment Management & Student Retention Services Debralee Divers. “The donors are delighted to see the tangible results of their generous contributions and for the opportunity to meet our students. Equally important, the scholarship recipients appreciate the opportunity to thank those who have helped them achieve their dreams,” added Divers who organized the event.
A capacity crowd of more than 230 people including donors, students and their families, and representatives from the Bowling Green campus attended the event.
Throughout the morning, 138 students were recognized and they collectively were awarded nearly $150,000 in scholarships.
“To be honored in front of my peer, family, and friends, gave me so much pride and fulfillment. This awards means so much to me and my family. I am honored to receive it,” said BGSU Firelands freshman nursing student and Monroeville native Cheyanna Littlejohn. She was awarded the Huron County Medical Auxiliary Endowment Fund for Health Careers Scholarship.
Students can receive scholarships based on their achievements inside or outside of the classroom or for financial need. For some students, financial need is the only thing that stands between them and their dreams of a college education.
“Words can never describe how much a scholarship means to a family like mine,” added Littlejohn who is from a family of 10 children. Two of her siblings graduated from BGSU and a third is attending BGSU Firelands as a high school student through the Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program.
“We are very proud of our scholarship recipients,” said Dean of BGSU Firelands William Balzer. “I encourage them to use their own special gifts and the generous gifts from our donors to get the most out of their education. The finest expression of gratitude to our donors is to have our recipients be successful in college, and then utilize their skills and abilities to contribute to the success of our community.”
