HURON, OH: “WAITING FOR LIFE TO BEGIN” Caryl Crane Youth Theatre and Goodwill Industries introduces a new junior production of Once On This Island, May 2-4, 2014. Featuring 36 actors, ages 6-12, Once On This Island will be presented in the McBride Auditorium at BGSU Firelands College
Once On This Island is the highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid. Filled with songs and dances it is the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues, nurses and falls in love with Daniel, a boy from the wealthy side of the island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
Featuring a cast of 36 from 12 area schools, Once On This Island is directed and choreographed by Caryl Crane Youth Theatre Artistic Director Brian Marshall, is sponsored by Goodwill Industries, and plays on the McBride Auditorium stage in the North Building on BGSU Firelands Campus May 2, 3 and 4, 2014. Once On This Island is the anchor production surrounding the 4th Annual Ronald M. Ruble New Play Festival on May 3, 2014. The festival presents unpublished works for children and youth theatre through a nationwide search in hopes of launching the next Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz. Three finalists have been chosen and will be presented in the 4th Annual Ronald M. Ruble New Play Festival on May 3, 2014, in the McBride Auditorium at BGSU Firelands College: Operation Oddball by Lisa Bruna, Losing Moscow by Kate Jacobs and Andy Burton, and President Mom by Becca Anderson. These finalists, chosen from a nationwide search for the most promising unproduced theatrical works relevant to youth today, will be presented in a staged-reading format utilizing The Caryl Crane Youth Theatre troupe of teen actors and a Festival Winner will be chosen. That winner will receive a $500 check from this year’s sponsor, Goodwill Industries of Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Counties, and an offer of a three-week workshop in the CCYT 2014-2015 season.
