A message from the Dean
Happy holidays and happy new year. As we complete another year, I am struck by the impressive and noteworthy successes we shared at BGSU Firelands in 2016.

Tops on that list would be the completion of our 50th Anniversary Celebration which included galas, parades, faculty speaker series, community events and more; however, one of the most rewarding events was honoring 50 of our most outstanding alumni and friends . The event was an opportunity to recognize the impactful role the community has played in the development of the college since the first days in 1965 and recognize alumni who, through their accomplishments and contributions to a global community, have advanced the goals and image of BGSU Firelands. One of those individuals was Audrey Shafer and you can read about her in this edition of the newsletter.

In 2016 we also held the first classes in the new Allied Health & Sciences expansion, a 12,700 square foot two-story addition to the current North Building which provided critically needed laboratory spaces in the natural and physical sciences. The new facilities are an immeasurable asset to the students and also help facilitate annual events like the Women in STEM Conference which is highlighted in this newsletter.

This year we look forward to starting Phase II of the Allied Health & Sciences Project which includes 17,000 square feet of renovations to George Mylander Hall. The remodeled facilities will be the home for high-demand degree programs in nursing and allied health careers including radiologic technology, respiratory care, and diagnostic medical sonography. Together, both Phases of the Allied Health & Sciences Project will add more than $6 million in new facilities and resources for our students. The project was made possible through dozens of generous contributions and donors like Kathleen Linz who you will read about today.

In this edition of the newsletter you will also read about two of the outstanding people who contributed to the success of the BGSU Firelands campus in 2016. Enjoy the feature articles on Student Government leader Bethany Evans and Assistant Professor of Spanish Leonel Carrillo .

I'm looking forward to an equally exciting year in 2017 and I look forward to sharing the developments with you in the college newsletter. If you are interested in more information on any of the articles included in this newsletter, I encourage you to contact me.

With regards,

Andy Kurtz
