Course Objectives

 

1.         To learn strategies for preparing and executing a successful job search.

 

2.                  To learn skills resulting in the successful preparation of a resume cover letter and job search information (JIST) card.

3.                  To learn and practice skills related to networking and interviewing.

 

4.                  To develop a job search plan.

 

Course Requirements

 

1.         Because of the abbreviated nature of the course, attendance is required at all class sessions.  Missing more than 2 classes will adversely affect your grade.

 

2.                  All assigned readings, homework and projects are to be completed on the day indicated in the syllabus or assigned by the instructor unless otherwise indicated by the instructor. 

 

3.                  In the event of an unavoidable absence, the student is responsible for all in-class work, assignments and handouts.  It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor as soon as possible in order to receive the necessary information and/or handouts.

Resume and Job Search Correspondence

 

Well-written resumes and cover letters can be a vital part of a successful job search.  Students will be asked to write an initial draft of a resume and a cover letter, with final drafts to be due as part of your final project.

 

Interviewing

 

A well-conducted interview is another keystone of a successful job search.  Students will be asked to participate in a practice interview which will be evaluated.

 

Job Search Information (JIST) Card

 

Wile not a traditional element of the job search, asmall personal information card can be a useful tool.  Students will be asked to submit initial and final drafts of such a card.

 

Web Walk-Up

 

Students will be asked to register on the Bowling Green State University Career Services web site, including creating an on-line version of their resume.
