Course Requirements

1.                  Because of the abbreviated nature of this course, attendance is strongly encouraged at all class sessions.

2.                  All assignments are to be completed on the day indicated when they are handed out or as stated in the syllabus.  Any late work not approved in advance by the instructor will be dropped one letter grade for each week overdue.

Assignments

Journals

You are required to write one journal for each of the first five classes.  Journals are due by the beginning of class each week, and are to be submitted by email.  Journal writing is your opportunity to reflect on has been talked about and worked on in class.  The journals reflect your own thinking about how the ideas discussed in class apply to you and the decisions you face.  There may be specific issues or topics about which you will be asked to write.  Your journals will reflect your own views, and will not be judged in terms of “right and wrong”.  However, credit will not be given for simple reports on what was done in class.  I look forward to reading your thoughts and ideas.

SIGI PLUS

Visit my.bgsu.edu, and complete the SIGI PLUS career inventory.  Complete this before the fourth week of class.

Self Directed Search/Personality Mosaic

These are career interest inventories which will be completed as assigned.

Self Awareness Paper

This paper, due the fifth week of class, is designed to help you organize what you have learned, and to facilitate the process of relating your sense of who you are to your career development.  This is a personal narrative, not a research paper.  This paper should be five - ten pages long.  The paper must be typed,  proof read and spell-checked. Include:

1.                  Personal background: influences on you (family, past jobs and activities) and how they have shaped the way you think about your career.

2.                  Your Holland code, and how it affects the way you think about your career.

3.                  Values, aptitudes and other “intangibles” which may affect your career choice.

4.                  Your personal philosophy of work. Consider the questions: “Why should I work?” “What is it that I want to get out of working?” “”Where does work fit into my overall goals, needs and desires in life?”

Career Exploration Project

This assignment will be discussed in class, and is due during the last two weeks of the course.

Career Plan

This is an opportunity to plan your next steps.  Identify which career most interests you, and the actions you plan to reach your goal.
