History: My undergraduate work was completed at the Michigan State University in the "good old days" (the ‘70s) and my graduate education took place at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, in the ‘80s. I came to academia rather late in my career compared to many others, but the time was well spent in doing interesting clinical work. That part of my career included working in a closed psychiatric in-patient unit, supervising a methadone rehabilitation program in Detroit, working in one of the nation's first NIMH supported 24 hour emergency psychiatric service in Lansing, Michigan, doing therapy and psychological testing for various community mental health agencies, and directing the counseling center for St Francis College in Pennsylvania. I now work as a professor of psychology for Bowling Green State University, where I've been for some 20 years. In addition, I also do some consulting as a clinical psychologist for Firelands Regional Health Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio.
Professional Activities: Most of my time is spent teaching about 24 credits per academic year, which includes graduate as well as undergraduate courses. My major research areas are the psychology of self-esteem, the emerging field of positive psychology, and psychotherapy integration.
In addition, I have also been fortunate enough to have received a few professional awards, such as the college's Distinguished Teacher Award (1990 and 2001) and Distinguished Scholarship Award (1995 and 2005). Last but not least, I am exploring the possibilities of online education, especially offering selected topics online for graduate, undergraduate, or continuing education credit.
