Some students do not do well on testing as a way of demonstrating the knowledge. Others have an interest in a particular topic that is not well covered in the class. In order to address these learning styles and needs, you may do a alternative learning opportunity that raises your lowest score on one test by one full letter grade. For example, if you earned an F on an exam, you could raise it to a D.
This activity involves selecting a topic that sat is listed somewhere on my course outline, not the text. You must then write a 4 page technical report. The first 3 pages must be on different articles concerning you topic. The articles must be at least four pages long and come from any copy of Scientific American Mind, Psychology Today, Psychological Reports, Psychological Bulletin, or American Psychologist all of which are found the library. Once you have read the material, complete a one page evaluation form as below. Be sure to use these headlines:
I. TECHNICAL REPORT
II. STUDENT NAME: Your name.
III. Name of the article, author, journal as well as its date, issue, and page numbers, or the name of the event and presenter. Internet versions are not acceptable. Try to use APA format for the reference if you can.
IV. DESCRIPTION: A paragraph describing what the article/event is about.
V. VALUES STATEMENT: A paragraph discussing values. Identify the major values that you feel are associated with the article or event. Ask yourself, for instance, what is it advocating or promoting and why is that desirable or undesirable.
VI. COURSE TIE-INS: The last paragraph should identify at least one clear and major "tie-in" between the concepts, ideas, and information presented in the article and that of the text and/or lectures.
The last or 4th page of your report should be titled INTEGRATION PAGE and consist of a statement of what you learned about the topic by doing this report. You can include tie-ins to the class, your major, or your life in this page, but it must show that you have gone beyond what is in the book and what we did in class. NOTE THAT THIS TIME, A PAGE IS DEFINED AS 20-22 LINES OF 70-80 CHARACTERS. BE SURE TO DOUBLE SPACE THE ENTIRE PAPER!
The four page paper is due the last day of regular lectures, not during final exam period.
