Firelands Psychological Services

Mission:

We work in collaboration with the broader university community to support the academic mission of the university by addressing certain educational, social, and personal issues that may interfere with the student's ability to succeed academically. FPS's primary purpose is to promote the academic well-being of students by providing psychological assessment, outreach, and consultation services. Examples of issues that may be addressed include: stress or anxiety, personal development, learning problems, and study/test taking concerns.

Our three main goals:

  1. To facilitate student development through the implementation of educational outreach, assessment, and consultation programs.
  2. To enhance and promote the valuing of diversity through actions that reflect an understanding of and respect for differences and similarities.
  3. To help students develop the personal awareness and skills necessary to overcome academic problems and to grow and develop in ways that will allow them to take advantage of the educational opportunities at the university.

What services are available?

  1. Assessment: FPS offers psychological testing for individuals concerned about the possibility of a learning problem or disability who are referred by a BGSU Firelands faculty/staff member through the Director of The Learning Center. Often, such individuals complete an interview and a comprehensive set of assessment measures so that the consultant can better identify the problem, understand its source, and provide recommendations.
  2. Psychoeducational Groups: Group settings offer individuals a wide range of information and support from peers and professionals. Examples of topics presented in this fashion include eating disorders, weight management, test anxiety, and general anxiety management. Current seminars will be listed with The Learning Center and on the Web page for FPS. If you are interested in requesting an outreach program or psychoeducational seminar that is not currently offered, please contact The Learning Center or the FPC.
  3. Evaluation and Referral: Individuals may sometimes be evaluated for resources which offer more or different services than those available through FPS. Referrals may be made to other offices on campus or to professionals off campus who provide specialized services.
  4. Individual Consultation: Under certain circumstances, individuals may meet with a consultant on a one-to-one basis to address personal concerns and issues on a short-term basis (6- 12 sessions). These situations must be approved by the supervising psychologist in advance of offering this particular service.

What services are not available?

Due to the size of the college and staff, Firelands Psychological Services can only offer a limited range of services. Services such as walk-in counseling, emergency or crisis intervention services, long-term personal or family counseling, and so forth, are not offered. Of course, emergencies are handled through The Director of the Learning Center, Penny Nemitz, (1-419-372-0614) in compliance with the College's agreement with Firelands Regional Health Care System.

What is psychological consultation?

Psychological consultation is an opportunity for students to explore educational and personal concerns. Consultants help to engage individuals in meaningful conversations or activities in order to promote an individual's academic and personal growth. The aim is to develop more effective problem-solving strategies and thereby decrease feelings of distress.

Who are the consultants?

The consultants are trained advanced graduate students with backgrounds in psychology that include a Master's degree plus relevant clinical experience. They are competent and empathic people who possess the skills to help students achieve a more satisfying educational experience at BGSU Firelands. These individuals are supervised by a licensed clinical psychologist.

Am I eligible?

Services are made available to any enrolled BGSU Firelands undergraduate or graduate student who is at least 18 years old and currently enrolled at Firelands. Due to state licensing laws in psychology, students who are currently enrolled in any of the clinical staff's courses, which include the intern and the supervisor (Dr. Mruk), must be referred to another center for services or wait until they are not taking classes from these individuals.

How do I see a consultant or use the services?

Some Firelands psychological services, such as psychoeducational groups, are offered to students and others in general because they are not clinical services. Announcements concerning such outreach activities will be made throughout the college with instructions as to how to participate. Others, such as testing, evaluation, or consultation, are offered largely on a referral basis. For these services, a student is usually first referred to the Director of the Learning Center by faculty, staff, or themselves. The Director screens them for services and, if appropriate, they are then sent to the psychology intern.

Where is Firelands Psychological Service located?

FPS is located in The Learning Center, in the West building on campus. The director of The Learning Center is Ms. Penny Nemitz. Her phone number is 1-419-372-0614. The mailing address is: Dr. Chris Mruk, Firelands Psychological Services, BGSU Firelands, One University Dr., Huron, OH 44839.

When is Firelands Psychological Services open?

FPS's hours change with each semester in order to accommodate the greatest student need. The hours will be listed in the Learning Center. If you call after hours and need emergency mental health attention, please call your local emergency service by dialing 911 or call Firelands Regional Medical Center Hotline at 1-800-826-1306. Please note that individual consultation and assessment services are available by appointment only as walk-in and emergency services are not provided.
