General Scholarship Information
In the 2012-13 academic year, BGSU Firelands awarded more than $185,000 in scholarships. Scholarships are based upon outstanding academic achievement, service and talent, as well as financial need in some cases.
BGSU Firelands Scholarships
Applications are available January 1. The application deadline is May 1. Students must have submitted an application for admission by May 1 to be considered for a scholarship.
BGSU Firelands Freshman Academic Scholarships
• student must be a 2014 high school graduate
• 3.2 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 system) at the end of the junior year and
• 22 or greater ACT Composite or
• 1030 or greater SAT (verbal + math)
All students meeting the above criteria and having a complete application on file (application, test scores, transcripts) with the BGSU Firelands Office of Admissions by July 30, 2014 will be awarded a scholarship based on the chart below. Recipients must be enrolled full-time (12 hours or more) at BGSU Firelands for each semester in which the award is given.
All awards are renewable for a second year, provided the student maintains a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and full-time enrollment (12 semester hours or more) at BGSU Firelands. (These scholarships are only applicable during the fall and spring semesters.)
Questions and Answers about BGSU Firelands Freshman Scholarships
Do you round up or recalculate GPA?
No, we do not round up or recalculate a grade point average. We accept the cumulative GPA as presented on the official high school transcript.
Do you use weighted or unweighted GPA?
We use the grade point average presented by the high school. If both weighted and unweighted GPA is presented, we will use the GPA that most benefits the student.
Do you use the ACT writing test in scholarship consideration?
Since this test is not a required portion of the ACT, we do not consider the score for scholarships.
Why do you only use the Critical Reading and Math score of the
In order to be consistent, we do not use the new writing portion of the SAT in the awarding process for scholarships. The majority of our applicants submit the ACT score and the writing portion of the ACT is not a required section of this test. In order to be fair to all applicants we do not use the writing sub-score of the SAT .
What if I meet the GPA requirement, but not the test score
To be awarded a freshman academic scholarship, a student must meet both the GPA and test score requirement by the July 30 deadline.
If I receive one of the scholarships, but my test score or GPA
increases and I qualify for a larger award, will I receive that
If you submit a new test score or higher GPA prior to the July 30 deadline, this information will be reconsidered; however, budgetary restrictions do not allow for increasing awards after the scholarship deadline has passed.
Will my BGSU Firelands spring Freshman Academic Scholarship be
Yes, as long as you meet the renewal requirements specified in your scholarship award letter, your award is renewable for an additional year.
