Bachelor of Science - College of Technology
The Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program in BGSU’s College of Technology offers a unique opportunity for students
who would like to continue their formal education beyond an associate’s degree, but do not have time and scheduling flexibility
each week to drive to a distant campus. All classes are offered online using the BGSU Blackboard Portal. This College of Technology
distance learning opportunity makes pursuing a bachelor’s degree more convenient for individuals who are employed full-time
and have family obligations, yet want to continue their education. Studies are done at the time, place and convenience of
the student, yet include a high level of interaction with both faculty and student colleagues.
Curriculum
The program builds on the student’s technical concentration from the associate’s degree by transferring those hours into a
bachelor’s program, and combines general education requirements with a well-rounded curriculum of major courses. The major
includes five required courses covering subject matter in computer-mediated communication, technology systems in societies,
transformational learning, adult learning, and training program development. Students continue their study in the major by
selecting four additional courses (which can be in areas related to training and education): materials development, design
and delivery, administration and evaluation. Students can also choose to study information usage and analysis: technological
forecasting, policy analysis, digital rights and media usability. Alternatively, the last four courses can be selected from
both of these groupings. Admission to this program is limited to students who hold an associate’s degree in an applied area
and have work experience in business, industry or education. Because of demand, enrollment in this program is limited.
Special Features
This program is specially designed for working adult students who have a need to study and to participate when their personal
schedules allow. Courses are designed to have a maximum amount of opportunity for interaction among students and between students
and faculty. This interaction uses discussion boards and other online technologies. Students and faculty actually find that
there is more interaction about important course material in the online setting than is often experienced in a classroom.
When students have completed this program, they not only have a Bachelor of Science in Technology Degree from Bowling Green
State University, but they have understandings and skills that they can apply to advance in their professional careers.
Sample Program
- The first two years toward the bachelor’s degree may be completed with an associate’s degree in one of several technological
programs at BGSU Firelands.
- Approximately 36 hours are transferred from the associate’s degree for the Technical and/or Applied Cognate.
- Additional hours are transferred to meet University (General Education) and College requirements. This is typically an additional
30 or more hours.
- The student enters the ATE major typically as a junior and begins to take the 27 hours of courses and 8 hours of co-operative
education that are required for the major.
- While taking major courses, the student may take any of the required college or university courses that were not taken as
part of the associate’s degree (typically 40 hours.) Many of these courses can be taken online or at BGSU Firelands.
- Taking two TECH/ATE major courses each semester, students can complete the bachelor’s degree in 5 to 6 semesters, depending
on hours transferred into the program.
College Highlights
Programs in the College of Technology are based on current and relevant specialties in industrial technology. Students pursue
quality professional preparation in: advanced technological education, aviation studies, architecture/environmental design,
construction management, electronics and computer technology, manufacturing technology, technology education and visual communication
technology.
All undergraduate technology students participate in semester-long cooperative work assignments. The college’s co-op program
is the fourth largest in the United States and Canada. BGSU is the international headquarters for Epsilon Pi Tau, the honorary
for professions in technology.
The college’s Electric Vehicle Institute is a prototype research and development entity that is devoted to the enhancement
of electric and hybrid vehicle development. A Digital Imaging Laboratory was initiated through funding from the Ohio Program
Excellence Award and features computers, cameras and scanners that capture an image digitally and output it as a slide, video
image or print.
Located within the aviation studies program, the Aviation Education Resource Center was created to promote aviation education,
safety and research.
