UT College of Nursing / BGSU RN to BSN Program

Nursing is a rewarding and challenging profession that incorporates theory, complex technology and caring. Baccalaureate nursing graduates provide research/theory based nursing care to healthy and ill individuals, families and communities in diverse health care settings including clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and outpatient facilities. Graduates also are prepared for advanced study at the master's degree level. The consortium of The University of Toledo (UT) and Bowling Green State University (BGSU) provides an innovative and unique baccalaureate nursing program. Students choose the university (BGSU or UT) that best meets their needs for general education, liberal arts and sciences, then attend the UT Health Science Campus as seniors for online nursing courses. The Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is awarded by the respective university. Bowling Green State University, with 18,000 students on the main campus, is located in Bowling Green, Ohio, a small classic college town. The University of Toledo, with 21,000 students, is located in residential areas of Toledo, Ohio, and has a Main Campus and Health Science Campus. By taking advantage of the exceptional academic and clinical learning opportunities available, graduates enjoy increased professional autonomy and career mobility, new levels of competence and confidence, and thorough preparation to meet the demands of a changing health care system. The College of Nursing has full approval of the Ohio Board of Nursing and is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The Undergraduate Nursing Program has two ways to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The Basic program is for students entering the nursing profession. The RN/BSN program is for associate degree or diploma graduates already licensed as registered nurses.

  • University of Toledo College of Nursing is an academic health science center located in a residential area of south Toledo. Approximately 1800 nursing, allied health, graduate and medical students are enrolled.
  • Bowling Green State University, with approximately 18,000 students, is located in Bowling Green, Ohio.
  • The University of Toledo, with about 21,000 students, is located in a residential area of Toledo, Ohio.

The School of Nursing has full approval of the Ohio Board of Nursing and is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Admission requirements

  1. Completion of university and nursing prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or above: English composition I and II Nutrition Math Computer Chemistry Ethics Biology Statistics Anatomy Lifespan Psychology Physiology Social Sciences Microbiology Humanities Psychology Diversity Courses
  2. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5; admission is competitive 
  3. Graduation from accredited nursing program 
  4. Validation of previous nursing knowledge (transfer credit), 
  5. Current unencumbered Ohio RN license 6. Students are required to authorize The University of Toledo to obtain criminal record checks and are responsible for fingerprinting expenses. 
  6. Students must declare and document misdemeanor and/or felony offenses that occur prior to admission to the nursing major and/or during program progression. Convictions may result in denial of admission to the major or dismissal after matriculation.

Career Profile

When providing direct care, registered nurses observe, assess and record symptoms, reactions and progress; assist physicians during treatments and examinations; administer medications; and assist in convalescence and rehabilitation.

Registered nurses also develop and manage nursing care plans; instruct patients and their families in proper care; and help individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health. Registered nurses are members of a profession and work diligently to uphold the standards of the profession.

Applications to the nursing program are available in the nursing offices on the main and Firelands campuses*** , in the Lima and the Archbold offices. A lab fee is assessed for all clinical courses.

*** To be eligible for enrollment via the Firelands campus, students must reside in Erie, Huron, Lorain, Ottawa, Sandusky, or Seneca County or a county east of Lorain County.
