Associate of Applied Science: ACCESS in Nursing

Lorain County Community College, in cooperation with BGSU Firelands College, offers its NLNAC accredited Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Programs at the BGSU Firelands College campus providing nursing education to the Huron/Sandusky resident. This satellite programs provide the opportunity for residents of the areas to earn the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing from LCCC. All support courses taken at BGSU Firelands College will transfer to LCCC. The clinical courses are offered at local health care agencies in the Sandusky.

Career Profile

Registered nurses (RNs) provide care to patients, families and communities and also work to promote health, prevent disease and help patients cope with illness. Registered nurses may work in hospitals, physicians’ private offices, nursing homes, clinics, schools, work sites and in patients’ homes under the direc tion of such health professionals as physicians, dentists, podiatrists, optometrists and others.

When providing direct care, registered nurses observe, assess and record symptoms, reactions and progress; assist physicians during treatments and examinations; administer medications; and assist in convalescence and rehabilitation.

Registered nurses also develop and manage nursing care plans; instruct patients and their families in prop er care; and help individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health. Registered nurses are members of a profession and work diligently to uphold the standards of the profession.

Registered nurses are caring and compassionate; are able to accept responsibility and direct, delegate to and/or supervise others; are able to follow orders precisely; and are able to determine when consultation is required. All nurses are patient advocates and health educators.

Job Outlook

Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations well beyond the year 2000. This growth will be driven by technological advances in patient care, which permit a greater number of medical problems to be treated, and an increasing emphasis on primary (basic) care.

In addition, the number of older people, who are much more likely than younger people to need medical care, is projected to grow rapidly.

About the Program

This program prepares graduates to function as registered nurses in hospitals, nursing homes and other health care agencies. Registered nurses promote health for clients through hygienic care; teaching; assessment of body systems; implementation of the nursing process, including treatment modalities offered by the physician; and rehabilitative care.

Upon completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to take the NCLEX examination for licensure as a registered nurse.
