Interdisciplinary Program
Bachelor of Liberal Studies
The liberal studies degree program is ideally suited for students with interdisciplinary interests beyond a single academic department or structured interdisciplinary program. This degree program is also ideal for students who enroll in courses during the evening hours. It is available only to students at the sophomore level and above.
Program Requirements
The following elements are required before admission into the liberal studies degree program is accepted:
- Completion of no fewer than 30 semester hours;
- A minimum grade point average of 2.25 or greater;
- At least 30 semester hours must be completed after acceptance into the program;
- Submit a personal essay with specific long-term and short-term goals, objectives and proposed curriculum;
- Complete Varieties in Writing (English 112);
- Complete BGSU’s BG Perspective core courses.
- To be eligible to graduate from the program, students must:
- Complete 122 required semester hours with no more than 27 hours within one department or school;
- Meet all the program admission requirements;
- Complete 100 hours of course- work within the college;
- Meet all the University’s bachelor’s degree requirements;
- Follow an approved program of study; and
- Complete the final 30 semester hours at BGSU.
Students should be aware that this program may not be adequate preparation for admission to graduate programs or for careers that specify course sequences and specializations. However, this degree program allows for a more meaningful advising relationship and the student is not restricted to the requirements and course structure of a major or minor.
Preparation for College
Because the liberal studies degree program is broad and flexible, it is not essential for students to have taken specific high school courses. However, a solid background in English composition, mathematics, foreign language, natural sciences, social and behavioral sciences and humanities is an important preparation for college work.
Completing the requirements for high school graduation is necessary for admission to BGSU, but only finishing the minimum coursework will leave you unprepared for college. Consider taking four years of mathematics instead of the three that are required. Two, three or even four years of the same foreign language is excellent for preparation for college. You will also benefit from competency in computer use. Courses that provide exposure to or training in the visual and performing arts are excellent choices.
